Damen Naval and THR Marine have signed a contract covering the supply of deck equipment for the new Combat Support Ship (CSS) Damen Naval is building for the Royal Netherlands Navy.
The contract includes the supply of a set of tailor-made winches, two frequency driven anchor handling and mooring winches for 66K3 chain, with chain stoppers, and finally two mooring winches with a nominal 120KN pulling force. All equipment will be delivered at Damen Shipyards Galati, Romania – where the CSS is under construction – in the first quarter of 2022.
Frequency driven winches stand out for being more efficient in energy consumption and maintenance than the traditional electric and hydraulic systems. The system inter alia reduces the use of electrical power and installation costs, and saves time during anchor and mooring operations. Furthermore, the system limits the mechanical forces on the winch, thus promoting the winches’ lifespan regarding spare parts and maintenance.
All THR Marine winches are designed and produced in Groningen, the company’s Dutch home base. THR Marine is a production company for the design and supply of a broad range of winches for the maritime industry. In addition, THR Marine has a wide global network of maintenance partners able to provide service support.
Through the years, Damen Naval and THR Marine have cooperated closely on various other naval projects, including the SIGMA class frigates and corvettes for foreign navies and for the Royal Netherlands Navy’s Joint Support Ship HNLMS Karel Doorman.
Next to supplying Damen Naval, THR Marine is also supplying winches to other Damen Shipyards Group subsidiaries. Recently, towing winches were delivered for the Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld built DP2 Shoalbuster workboat Brutus.
